George Hickman Receives CHIME/HIMSS John E. Gall, Jr. CIO of the Year Award

Orlando, FL, February 27, 2008 - CHIME member George Hickman, CIO at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, received the CHIME/HIMSS John E. Gall, Jr. CIO of the Year Award on February 26th at the annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, FL.

A 25-year veteran of the healthcare industry, Hickman’s tenure at Albany Medical Center has been marked by numerous achievements, including the deployment and implementation of an advanced inpatient electronic medical record system.

Hickman has contributed to the advancement of the CIO profession through his efforts with both CHIME and HIMSS. He is a charter member of CHIME and has been active on several CHIME committees, including the Membership Committee and the Advocacy Leadership Team. He served on the HIMSS Board of Directors from 2004-2007, serving as Chair from 2006-2007.

He is a frequent author and speaker, and is active in both state and national healthcare IT initiatives. Reflecting on George’s contributions to the industry, CHIME Board member Rick Schooler said, “George’s ability to align and support business and patient care strategies with information technology has resulted in tremendous organizational and personal success. His demonstrated commitment to the HIT profession, his personal and professional ethics, and his engaging style of leadership are admired by all who know him.”

The award, co-sponsored by CHIME and HIMSS, was designed to recognize IS executives who have made significant contributions to their organization and to the profession in general. The award is named in honor of the late John E. Gall, Jr., who pioneered the implementation of the first fully integrated medical information system in the world at California's El Camino Hospital in the 1960s. Gall passed away in October of 2001.
