CHIME Foundation Presents Lifetime Achievement Award to Ivo Nelson

Ann Arbor, MI, October 28, 2009 – The CHIME Foundation has recognized Ivo Nelson, chairman of Encore Health Resources, with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Given to Nelson at the CHIME09 Fall CIO Forum in Indian Wells, Calif., the award is meant to recognize contributions to the healthcare IT industry throughout an entire career.

Nelson founded Houston-based Encore Health Resources in February with Dana Sellers, its CEO. The consulting firm supplies project management, strategic planning, and data analytics and reporting assistance to healthcare organizations.

“We’re consulting regarding electronic medical records with hospitals and physician groups, helping them achieve the meaningful use of these systems,” he said. Demonstrating meaningful use of electronic medical records systems is essential so providers can quality for federal stimulus funds for the use of clinical systems.

Nelson has many years of service in a variety of healthcare service companies. Prior to forming Encore Health Resources, Nelson worked for IBM after the corporation acquired Healthlink in 2005, a provider-focused healthcare information systems consulting firm that Nelson founded in 1992. At IBM, Nelson was named leader of IBM’s global healthcare practice with overall responsibility for the healthcare services that IBM provides to clients worldwide. Nelson also has served with corporations such as EDS and Perot Systems.

For CHIME, Nelson served as a healthcare business representative on the CHIME board.

This is a significant time to be assisting providers who are hoping to achieve the incentives for implementing healthcare IT, and healthcare reform has given new significance to the use of IT in streamlining healthcare delivery, Nelson said.

“I think it’s exciting to see essentially what we’ve been doing for the last 30 years get so much recognition,” he said. “This is the missing link in healthcare. Not only is IT front and center, but everyone believes that it will make the system more efficient.”

Nelson said he is flattered to receive the award, and is thankful for the support he’s received over the years.

“I’ve served most of my career as an executive or CEO of a healthcare IT organization. You’re the face of the company, but you’re not the company,” he said. “CEOs get a lot of credit for what a lot of great people do behind them. This is an award for all those people who made me look good.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award provides peer and industry recognition for Foundation firm representatives who have demonstrated value through their organization and individual efforts to the healthcare industry and/or the CHIME and CHIME Foundation membership; provides an opportunity for sharing examples of exemplary leadership and integrity within the healthcare IS industry; and acknowledges the creative and innovative application of technology and management principles to the furtherance of the healthcare information systems industry, particularly through effective partnerships with chief information officers and their respective healthcare institutions.
