CHIME to Host Public Webinar on Certification (CHCIO) Program

ANN ARBOR, MI, January 26, 2010 – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is pleased to announce it will host a public educational webinar February 4, 2010 at 4 pm EST on its Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) Program.

The webinar titled “Beyond Certification: A CHIME CHCIO Program Overview” will discuss the CHCIO Program requirements, benefits of becoming a CHCIO, various content areas of the examination, and explain what differentiates the CHCIO designation from other industry credentials.

CHIME members who helped both develop the CHCIO Program and formulate the examination will serve as panelists. Speakers include Tim Stettheimer, PhD, chair of CHIME’s certification committee and CHIME Board of Trustees as well as senior vice president and regional CIO at St. Vincent's Health System; Russell P. Branzell FCHIME, CIO/VP at Poudre Valley Health System; George McCulloch, Associate Director, Deputy CIO at Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Randy McCleese, VP-IS & CIO at St. Claire Regional Medical Center; and Donna Roach, VP IT/CIO at Bronson Healthcare Group.

“The webinar will layout the steps of why the CHCIO program and certification was created and explain its importance in the healthcare industry,” said Roach.

“It is a certification designed for healthcare CIOs in a time when the healthcare industry and is looking to our leadership and expertise. We will take time to answer questions and address any concerns they may have.”

CHCIO status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development for healthcare CIOs. Launched by CHIME in July 2009, the certification program is the only credentialing program that distinguishes healthcare IT executives from others in the industry.

“We believe CHCIO status is now the standard that organizations must use when determining who leads healthcare IT projects and initiatives,” said Stettheimer. “Becoming a Certified Healthcare CIO is not easy, but it’s important that we keep the bar high so this credential represents the best of the best.” Thus far 43 CHIME members and CHIME Affiliate program participants are among the first to be credentialed as CHCIO and CHCIO-Eligible.

The CHCIO Program was developed for CIOs by CIOs, with input from CHIME member volunteers who worked with partnering certification professionals at Castle Worldwide to define the major responsibilities for which healthcare CIOs are accountable and develop questions, resulting in the creation of the exam and certification requirements.

Because of their crucial role in the development and creation of the program and the examination, which included over 1,000 volunteer hours, 26 CHIME members were awarded certification status (indicated by an asterisk in the list below).

CHIME members who have been in a CIO or equivalent position for at least three years, pass the 125-question CHCIO examination, and collect 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are eligible to become certified. CHCIOs must also be committed to ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years.

Additionally, CHIME is dedicated to the development of future industry leaders and as such awards the designation: CHCIO-Eligible. This status is awarded to those candidates who meet all of the program requirements but lack the requisite number of years of experience as a CIO.

In October, a group of 17 CHIME members became the first to apply for the Certified Healthcare CIO Program and pass the inaugural CHCIO Examination during the CHIME09 Fall CIO Forum.

The next CHCIO Examination is scheduled for Saturday, February 27, 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with the CHIME/HIMSS CIO Forum.

“The CHCIO program was designed to promote professional growth within the healthcare IT profession,” said McCulloch, “and this webinar will help explain the value of accreditation and what’s involved.”
