CHIME Announces Scholarship Winners
Ann Arbor, MI – The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) announces the recipients of its Spring 2009 Healthcare CIO Boot Camp Scholarships.
Mary D. King, Director of IT-System Applications at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC, has received the CHIME Women’s Boot Camp Scholarship. King has more than 25 years experience in community hospitals and state health care administration, including nearly 10 years of IT leadership. She is experienced in collaborating with diverse teams to achieve common goals, including successfully implementing enterprise-wide, multi-faceted clinical and corporate information systems.
CHIME member Novlet Mattis Bradshaw, CIO of Rex Healthcare, said of King, “Mary possesses fundamental and key functional, technical, financial acumen, and planning skills and experiences to become an IT leader.” Bradshaw added that she is excited for King to have the opportunity to attend highly-regarded educational sessions, such as the CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp, that will help prepare her for the next step in her career.
The scholarship will be used by King to attend the Spring CIO Boot Camp where she believes she will sharpen her skills and lean from the faculty of well-known and respected CIO leaders how to achieve more in her current position and further her career.
Available to both CHIME members and their direct reports, the Women’s Scholarship was designed to enable more women to enter and move ahead in the healthcare IT profession, specifically into the healthcare CIO role. The scholarship is available to female candidates who show significant potential to become a CIO, or for female CIOs whose career will directly benefit from attending the CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp program.
Fernando Martinez, CTO/CSO of Broward Health in Ft. Lauderdale, was awarded the Healthcare CIO Boot Camp Minority Scholarship. Martinez has 32 years experience in healthcare with more than 12 years in extensive IT leadership positions. He is an accomplished technologist and IT security professional, and his career accomplishments include successful business development, strategic planning and large-scale project management, among others.
Writing in support of Martinez’s application, Doris Peek Crain, Vice President of Information Technology and CIO at Broward Health, said, “First and foremost, he is a superb technologist; but, he is also equally skilled in healthcare applications and operations. Given this unique combination of skills, the next logical step in Fernando’s career track is to become a CIO at a large multi-facility healthcare facility.”
Martinez said he believes attending the Healthcare CIO Boot Camp will help him to further his career and take the next step in that direction.
The Healthcare CIO Boot Camp Minority Scholarship was developed to enable more minorities to attend CHIME’s Healthcare CIO Boot Camp program. The program is designed to assist individuals in the healthcare IT profession to develop the required skills needed for becoming successful healthcare CIOs. The scholarships are available to minority candidates who show significant potential to become a CIO, or for current CIOs whose careers will directly benefit from attending the CIO Boot Camp program.
The scholarships will provide full tuition for attendance at the Spring Healthcare CIO Boot Camp. For more information on CHIME scholarships, visit www.cio-chime.org.
