GET REAL! Understanding Today’s Economy and Tomorrow’s New Future

Lowell Catlett, Ph.D.

Economic downturns are common (14 recessions during the last 80 years) and provide a means for society to re-balance what they deem important. Every recession leads to a spurt in new business starts, reformulation of business practices and new technological adaptations. This current pause is no exception as we focus on what we value most. Get ready for phenomenal growth in healthcare, energy and lifestyle markets. For those willing to embrace the opportunities, the next decade will be successful beyond any in history

Economic futurist Dr. Lowell Catlett is not a newcomer to predictions. As head of the New Mexico State University College of Agriculture, he's kept his fingers on the pulse of the future for many years, and he loves doing it. Dr. Catlett shares with us his unique perspective on what the future holds for healthcare as multiple forces converge in a way that will redefine the direction of our industry.

Horror-Scopes, Fantasies & Forecasts: Thoughts on the Future Role of the CIO

Thornton May

The CIO job ranks among the least understood in the enterprise today. The world's universities, think tanks, and consultancies have painted a contradictory, confusing, and inconsistent picture of who we are; what we do; and very importantly - where we are going.

If we are to become the great leaders we need to be, we need to dispel the horror-scopes (pessimistic visions of non-performance and role irrelevance), dial down the fantasies (there are some things that can't be done), and fine-tune the forecasts.

Empirical evidence reveals that successful next-gen IT c-suiters must master the entire spectrum of organizational activity operations (repetitive, ongoing activities), projects (unique, one-time initiatives), and Innovation.

Central to all this is the need to re-visit, re-cap, and re-position widely held mental models about the future role of the CIO.

Closing Keynote Address

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (1 CEU)

Lighting the Creative Flame

Boris Brott

Creativity rests in all our souls. This interactive, musical presentation demonstrates the five steps that are at the heart of every creative process. Renowned symphony conductor Boris Brott interacts with "Professor Siegfried" on screen, and together they will take the audience through the steps necessary to concoct anything from E=MC2 to an enlightened business plan. But the heart of the piece rests with Boris and Professor Siegfried taking the steps necessary to light the creative flame. After each step, Boris conducts the audience playing their own musical tone bars, and concludes this inspiring presentation with a roaring rendition of the music from Star Wars.
