Fixing Healthcare on the Back of a Napkin
Speaker: Dan Roam, Founder of Digital Roam Inc., Author

Technology writer and rudimentary artist Dan Roam decided that the American  conversation on health care reform should be simple enough to explain on the  back of a napkin. His slideshow series of four "back of the napkin" healthcare  illustrations is an award-winning presentation, which dramatizes the healthcare  players, their motivations, and the impact on the American consumer and tax  payer.

With the use of visual tools, Roam believes that anyone -- regardless of artistic talent or training -- can use simple pictures and illustrations to describe complex concepts, including thorny issues like healthcare reform, the HITECH Act, and meaningful use.

Roam’s “simpler” approach to resolving such business challenges will aid CIOs as they begin to play a larger leadership role in their organizations in light of the growing spotlight on technology and its role in healthcare reform.

Managing Change: The Healthcare Employee in 2010
Speaker: Marilyn Moats Kennedy, BSJ, MSJ, CEO, Moatskennedy, Inc.

Change is coming to the healthcare workplace, regardless of reform.

In a recent statement by Dr. David Blumenthal, the Department of Health and  Human Services' national coordinator for health IT, with a shortage of 50,000  workers, there needs to be an increase in skilled health IT employees to help  doctors and other health professionals become “meaningful users” of health IT. Therefore, it is important to consider what the next five years will bring.

There are five age cohorts in the workforce right now, with a sixth to be added in next ten years. Moats Kennedy will take a look at the myths and facts about each group and their values and why the Pre-Boomers and Baby Boomers will postpone retirement longer than any generation before them.

2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Closing Keynote
Lessons from Everest: How to Succeed in the Most Extreme Environments
Speaker: Alison Levine, Team Captain of the First American Women's Everest Expedition and Groundbreaking Polar Adventurer

The skills required to climb big mountains are no different from the skills  required to succeed in the world of business, especially for a CIO.

Leadership, teamwork, determination, tenacity, and the ability to adapt to a  changing environment are as critical in the jet stream as they are in the  workplace.

With the changing environment occurring in healthcare technology, CIOs are staring ahead at the ‘Meaningful Use’ mountain. Achieving those standands will make the climb challenging, and immense determination will be required. Levin’s presentation will take you on an incredible journey, where willpower is as important a qualification as experience; and good judgment is the most essential piece of equipment.

With inspiration from Levine, CIOs will be equipped to face the “mountain” ahead.
