The John E. Gall Jr. Award

Purpose
The award is named in honor of John E. Gall, Jr. who pioneered the implementation of healthcare information systems at El Camino Hospital in the 1960s. The recipient of the John E. Gall, Jr. award for the “CIO of the Year” shall be selected jointly by the Boards of Directors of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The award shall be presented to the CIO, who, in the opinion of the joint Boards of Directors, has best demonstrated the qualities of leadership in healthcare as described in the award criteria. This award shall be given for a lifetime of success and achievement as a CIO in the healthcare IT industry.

Eligibility
A candidate is required to meet these criteria:

  1. Is currently employed as a CIO and is a member in good standing of CHIME and HIMSS and has maintained that membership for not less than five consecutive years.
  2. Has participated in either leadership or organizational activities as a member of CHIME or as a member of HIMSS.
  3. Has demonstrated innovative leadership through effective use of technology in support of the strategic initiatives of his/her organization.
  4. Represents the highest standards of leadership in information technology in healthcare.
  5. Is respected and recognized as a role model to peers and the industry as exhibited by: 1) name recognition as an industry thought leader and spokesperson, and 2) progression of organizational and professional accomplishments vis a vis a successful track record over an extended period of time.
  6. Has advanced the professional standards embraced by CHIME and HIMSS.
  7. Is currently not serving on the Board of Directors for HIMSS or CHIME.

Nomination Process
The Gall Award is publicized to members of CHIME and HIMSS. Members from either organization can nominate a candidate for the Award; any person meeting the eligibility requirements can also nominate themselves for the Award.

The online application form asks candidates to supply the following information:

  1. a completed application form,
  2. a brief biographical sketch or current resume,
  3. a description of how they meet the Gall Award criteria, with documents supporting criterion number 5 (documentation could include articles or publications, presentations at industry events, awards or national recognition of the CIO and his or her organization), and
  4. a letter of recommendation from one of his/her peers endorsing them as a candidate for the award.

The deadline to nominate yourself or one of your colleagues is October 15, 2013.

The John E. Gall Jr. Award is presented to the winner at the HIMSS Annual Conference.
