The primary objective of the Healthcare CIO Boot Camp Minority Scholarship is to enable more minorities to enter and move ahead in the healthcare IT profession and, in particular, to help them develop their skills so they can become successful healthcare Chief Information Officers (CIOs). These scholarships are available to minority candidates who show significant potential to become a CIO, or for CIOs whose career will directly benefit from attending the Boot Camp program.

The scholarships will be awarded in the amount of the full tuition fee for attendance at the Boot Camp program. There will be two scholarships awarded annually; one scholarship will be awarded for attendance at the Spring Boot Camp program and one will be awarded for attendance at the Fall Boot Camp program.

Applications for the Fall Boot Camp Minority Scholarship must be received by July 1; the winner will be selected by July 1. Scholarships must be used for the program session (Spring or Fall) that the candidate applied for.

In addition to completing the scholarship application form, applicants must meet the following criteria and submit the materials described below:

Applicant Criteria:

  • Must report to or be a current CHIME member at the time of application and at the time they attend the Boot Camp if awarded a scholarship.
  • Must be on a career path with the goal of becoming a successful CIO in the healthcare industry.
  • Must be a minority. For purposes of this scholarship, minority is defined as being an African American, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, Native Pacific Islander, or Native Alaskan, or Asian.

Materials required:

  1. Essay: Scholarship candidates must demonstrate their interest by submitting a type-written essay. The essay should be no longer than 1000 words.
PART A: This part of the essay should address the candidate’s vision and goals as a future healthcare IT leader and how they have demonstrated leadership in their organization.

PART B: This part of the essay should address how this scholarship and attendance at the Boot Camp will enhance their ability to improve their healthcare IT leadership skills and progress toward a position as a CIO or enhance their current position as a CIO.

Also in this section of the essay, if your organization has limited resources for funding staff development, please explain those issues and how the scholarship could help you achieve your staff development goals.
  2. Letter of recommendation: Candidates must submit a letter or recommendation from their immediate supervisor. If the candidate is not a CIO, the letter must come from the CHIME member to whom they report. If the candidate is a current CHIME member, the letter must come from the person to whom they report.
The letter should support the applicant’s attendance at the Boot Camp and explain why their participation would be beneficial to the candidate and their organization. The letter should also support the fact that applicant is either on a CIO career path, or if they are a CIO, that attendance at the Boot Camp is important to their professional development. Any issues relating to financial need should also be explained.
  3. Resume: Scholarship candidates should provide a current resume highlighting their experience and/or achievements in the healthcare IT field.
